From 2016 to 2019, I had the pleasure of organizing a free historical miniature battle gaming day in the old upstairs room at Guardian Games. Back in those days, that quite large room could be rented for the entire day for a mere $50. In the final year, and under new ownership, that rate was supposed to go up to $10 or $20 an hour, but this still made it the cheapest space rental in the entire Portland metro area!
I got to occasionally create fun cut-out promo art from old comics, and attendance quickly rose from 12 or so to over 30 people every year (although it could never really push past that low 30s ceiling, and establishing strong year-after-year attendees proved elusive).
The pandemic shut the event down, and Guardian Games unfortunately converted that upstairs room into storage and staff offices during the pandemic. Game stores are not as interested monetarily in providing gaming space for free or practically free anymore, either. So Ambuscade (and cheap space rentals in Portland) passes strictly into the realm of the archival past, and you can read a little about them below.
